Secret, Secret, I know a secret! They were all mocking me. The wind the grass the trees. Even the birds in the air twittered around telling me they knew something I didn't.
The children huddled in the playground, throwing sly glances my way, I could almost read their minds. "She doesn't know, we do! we do!". Even the pavement beneath my feet cracked into a sly smile at the knowledge that was being kept from me.
It was obvious, the whole world was privy to a secret from which I was being excluded and until I discovered what it was I wouldn't really be part of the world, just a ghost hovering around the edges.
I was going to uncover this secret. No matter how long it took, no matter what I had to do. It would not remain hidden to me, I could not allow it. So I began my mission.
I lay in the grass and listened to it's whisper but the language was alien to me and the secret skittered by unclaimed. I gazed at the clouds trying to unravel the codes that I caught glimpses of but the key was hidden from me.
I walked through the woods kicking up the leaves to see if the secret lay buried beneath them. The icy fingers of the breeze plucked at my coat and hair. "This way, this way" it seemed to call and I followed and sometimes through the branches I thought I glimpsed something half hidden and ran towards it in a spurt of anticipation but each time it glided away before me.
Eventually I stopped looking in the world, realising somehow that the secret was hidden in the one place I had not thought to look. Buried deep inside me.
